Phagenesis was founded in 2007 but its origins stretch back to the mid-1990s. Dr Shaheen Hamdy, a gastro-enterologist, began to use then new brain imaging techniques to study the brain’s role in swallowing. The results of his work were published in top peer-reviewed journals.
He then set about developing methods of stimulating the brain to improve swallowing function in patients where it has been impaired. The technology he has created is being turned into practical medicine by Phagenesis.
Phagenesis is now located at Manchester Science Park.
