New guidelines for neurogenic dysphagia published by the German Society of Neurology (DGN) – Should recommendation (S1/ grade B) for pharyngeal electrical stimulation

On 13^th of May 2020, the new S1 guidelines for neurogenic dysphagia were published on the homepage of the German Society for Neurology (DGN).

In the section about swallowing therapy, the DGN committee of experts gave the following recommendation for pharyngeal electrical stimulation based on the convincing data:

„ Pharyngeal electrical stimulation (PES) should be used to treat dysphagia in tracheotomized stroke patients with a supratentorial lesion.”

This is excellent news which underlines the effectiveness and importance of pharyngeal electrical stimulation in the treatment of neurogenic dysphagia. New clinical data also show that brain stem stroke, traumatic brain injury and critical illness polyneuropathy/ critical illness myopathy patients also benefit significantly from PES. PES is approved for the treatment of neurogenic dysphagia.
